The Furrer-Family became involved with motorcars at the beginning of the last century. Legend has it that Johannes Furrer, born in 1879, operated the first Taxicabs in Zurich, Switzerland. One of his sons, Otto Furrer, took over the company after the Second World War and branched out into motor coaches. The companies pride was a custom made Alpenwagen built especially for tours through the Swiss Alps.
In those days running such a business required professional training as a mechanic and so Otto Furrer jr was sent for a 4 year apprenticeship. He decided not to join his fathers business and founded in 1961 tunetec, a garage specializing in BMC Cars. Always being very inventive and driven by an obsession for quality he invested heavily in machinery. This enabled him to manufacture his own parts thereby improving the vehicles. tunetec also imported and modified Lotus and other British makes. In the late seventies Otto Furrer suspended mechanical work as he ventured into his new fascination electronics.
